About the play

'A journey through the magical world of questions'

How often do children ask questions and actually get answers from adults? And how often do adults enter the magical world of questions?

The play is based on Mahashweta Devi’s well known picture-storybook Why-Why Girl and celebrates the thrill of ‘WHY?’ It is the story of Moyna and at the same time the story of so many children, all who always ask the question ‘Why?’ Performed through dance and movement with live music, the play shows glimpses of their lives and of their minds.

Kyun-Kyun Ladki has been performed in Mumbai, Bangalore and Pune, for young and adults audiences.

Director’s note
The stage production of Kyun-Kyun Ladki has been devised over a period of 4 months of workshops with adult actors, musicians and children in the age group of 5 to 12 years. It has been a process of taking inspiration from the questions in Mahashweta Devi’s story and finding different contexts for these same questions. The actors have also gone through rigorous physical training under choreographer and Bharatnatyam dancer Hamsa Moily. The end result is a fluid performance style that includes mime, movement and rhythm. The non-verbal nature of many parts of the play have made a very special connect with younger children in the audience. Every performance is a new journey with actors and audience re-interpreting the story and its layers.
